Planttel.net Accelerator

Readme

Planttel.net Accelerator is a Web acceleration program that resides on your computer. Planttel.net Accelerator works in conjunction with acceleration servers on the Internet to provide dial-up users with the ability to rapidly access Web pages and e-mail, and to download files much faster than would otherwise be the case.

For information on using Planttel.net Accelerator, see Help. This local Help file contains information on system requirements, supported and compatible browsers, and Internet access troubleshooting tips.

When you are connected to the Internet, additional information on product features is available from the online references that can be accessed from the taskbar menu.

Compatibility with Other Software Products

Planttel.net Accelerator is compatible with most ad blockers, popup blockers, personal firewalls, and other utilities. In some cases, minor configuration of either Planttel.net Accelerator or other products is required. Before using Planttel.net Accelerator, review the following information about its compatibility with other software products.

Important: If you use MacAfee Privacy Service, note that Planttel.net Accelerator requires MacAfee Privacy Service Version 4.0.1.24 or above, or Security Center 6.0 or above.

AdSubtract

Like Planttel.net Accelerator, AdSubtract uses a local proxy server. You can use AdSubtract together with Planttel.net Accelerator after adjusting a few settings in your browser and in AdSubtract. Click Here if you need to determine the port number used by Planttel.net Accelerator. When using the two programs together, you should make sure that Planttel.net Accelerator is only accelerating connections without proxy conflicts. If you need to change your option settings, follow these steps:

-         Click Planttel.net Accelerator's icon (near the system clock).

-         Select the Options menu item.

-         Click Advanced.

-         Click Only accelerate connections without proxy conflicts.

-         Click OK.

AdSubtract and Internet Explorer

The following steps allow you to chain together Planttel.net Acceleratorand AdSubtract proxy settings for use with Internet Explorer. Although there are a number of steps, each only takes a few moments to accomplish:

1.        Note that the order in which Internet Explorer, AdSubtract, and Planttel.net Accelerator start is not important.

2.        From Internet Explorer select Tools -> Internet Options. Then click the Connections tab.

3.        Select the connection you are using, if it is not already selected, (typically from the Dial-up settings list). Click Settings.

4.        Select the Use a proxy server for this connection check box. Then click Advanced.

5.        Make sure that the proxy address for HTTP is set to 127.0.0.1. If the proxy address is missing or is some other value, change it to 127.0.0.1 (This numeric setting may be automatically changed to AdSubtract -- if so, that is fine.)

6.        Make sure that the port number is set to 4444, AdSubtract's default proxy server port number. If the port number is missing or different, change it to 4444.

7.        Double-click the AdSubtract icon in the taskbar (near the system clock). Then click the Proxy tab.

8.        Select the Use next-hop HTTP proxy server check box.

9.        Set the HTTP Proxy to localhost (without quotation marks). Then set the port number to Planttel.net Accelerator's proxy server port number. By default this number is 8080, but it may be different on your system. Click Here for instructions on verifying and setting the HTTP proxy port number.

You can verify that both AdSubtract and Planttel.net Accelerator are working together when:

-         Planttel.net Accelerator's taskbar icon (near the system clock) shows moving arrows when you browse the Internet.

-         The diagnostic test provided with AdSubtract succeeds. Double-click the AdSubtract icon (near the system clock). From the Main menu, click Test Filtering and follow the screen instructions.

If you do not get these results:

-         Double-check the changes you made.

-         Reboot and verify your settings. Then retest the two programs as described previously.

Important: Planttel.net Accelerator runs in the background at all times. If you stop it or remove it, the proxy setting changes you made to Internet Explorer will be lost. For this reason we suggest that you not disable or stop Planttel.net Accelerator if you want to use it with AdSubtract. If you do so, you will need to reset the proxy address and port in your browser.

Follow these instructions to re-enable AdSubtract after stopping Planttel.net Accelerator:

1.        Double-click the AdSubtract icon (in the taskbar, near the system clock).

2.        Select the Proxy tab.

3.        Clear the Use next-hop HTTP proxy server check box.

4.        Click Apply, then OK. Verify your changes using the diagnostic test provided with AdSubtract. Double-click the AdSubtract icon. From the Main menu click the Test Filtering button and follow the screen instructions.

4.        Make sure that the proxy address for the HTTP port address is set to 127.0.0.1, and the port is set to 5555. Click OK.

5.        Right-click the Cookie Crusher icon located in the corner of the taskbar near the clock. Choose Show from the menu.

6.        On the left side of the Cookie Crusher control panel window, click Configuration and select Chain to the following proxy server.

7.        In the box directly below, enter localhost. In the port number area to the right, enter the Planttel.net Accelerator port number, usually 8080

You can verify that Planttel.net Accelerator is working when the accelerator icon (near the system clock) shows moving arrows when you browse the Internet.

MacAfee Privacy Service

Planttel.net Accelerator requires MacAfee Privacy Service Version 4.0.1.24 or above, or Security Center 6.0 or above. If you do not have either of these versions (or higher ones), you can disable Planttel.net Accelerator to browse the Internet over an unaccelerated connection.

Zone Alarm

To use Zone Alarm with Planttel.net Accelerator, you need to answer two Zone Alarm configuration questions that appear when Planttel.net Accelerator is present on your system. Follow these steps to get to the two questions and the answers to provide:

1.        Stop, then Start Planttel.net Accelerator. You can do this from the Windows Start, Programs menu. When Planttel.net Accelerator starts the first time under Zone Alarm, two questions appear:

-         The first asks: Is it OK for Planttel.net Accelerator to act as a server? You can answer No to this question since it only needs to act as a server for connections originating inside your computer. Important: select the box that says, Remember this answer.

-         The second question appears when you begin accessing the Internet using the software program. Zone Alarm states: Planttel.net Accelerator wants to access this Internet. Is this OK? Answer Yes. Again, select the box Remember this answer.

Note: The software program will not operate properly if you reboot your computer before answering the Zone Alarm questions.

Zone Alarm Pro

Important: We have recently become aware of a problem with incomplete page loads when simultaneously using the software program and Zone Alarm Pro. This problem results in pages only partially loading and then stopping (timing out). We are currently working with Zone Labs to resolve this problem. In the meantime, if you want to use Zone Alarm Pro and Planttel.net Accelerator at the same time, the workaround is to go into the Zone Alarm Pro control panel and turn off the ad blocking and cookie control features. Note that this problem does not apply to the basic Zone Alarm version.

If you want to use the software program and Zone Alarm Pro after disabling the ad blocking and cookie control features, please follow the configuration instructions under Zone Alarm.

Obtaining Support

Use the help file available from the taskbar menu. Every effort has been made to anticipate and answer your questions.

If you do not find the answer to your particular question, contact your ISP or reseller for further assistance.
